Glossary

The world of graphic design, video production, and web development is full of technical terms that are often difficult to understand in everyday life. In this glossary, I explain the most important terms from the fields of print, video, and web – concisely, clearly, and without unnecessary jargon. Whether you want to learn about prepress, video editing, or web design: you'll find the right explanation here.

Missing a term you'd like explained? Just send it my way and I'll add it to the list.

CMYK

Color model for print, made up of the four print colors cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black). Unlike the RGB model used for screens, colors here are mixed subtractively – each additional color absorbs more light, until black is produced. Important to note: print files must always be created or converted to CMYK, otherwise colors in the printed result often appear paler or shifted compared to how they looked on screen.
